Actually, they DIDN'T all get killed. The raid didn't happen to U96, though such disasters were, I think, rather common. Buchheim put that ending on the story for art's sake. It is, after all, a novel, not a history-book.

Maybe it's my Hollywood background, but I was exultant when i discovered that those guys had actually survived!
