This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>Thank you. I try to be fair in my comments, and frankly I know more about literature than I do about U-Boats or the war, which I'm sure you've already noticed! Have you read Die Festung? While parts of it aren't exactly true to life (he fiddled with the time-scheme a little) I think that as regards Buchheim's actual activities during the summer of 1944, it's pretty accurate. Aside from his strong alliance with Lehmann-Willenbrock he was pretty much operating as an isolated agent, yanked around (usually for no reason at all, or for reasons that evaporated as the war intensified) by his superiors. I think it would have been difficult for him to sabotage the war effort very much. He did manage to "liberate" a great deal of exposed film for his own purposes, which causes some people to bitterly accuse him of defrauding the Nazi government . . . .??? Some people are so unpopular that they just can never win, I guess!
