"This film put a human face on the enemy, so that we see him as being no different from ourselves." Amen!

I believe Das Boot is (as you say) one of the "...best war epics of history..." It is able to put a human face on combatants because it maintains a tactical focus upon human vs human war and the tacticians never quite seem to be able to grasp their latent strategic possibilities much less act on them. Das Boot is a fine examination of the warrior class per se, nationality notwithstanding. I do not believe the film makers had that goal in mind. Das Boot touches warrior class division issues as Cross of Iron did. Airborne Mustang Hamaker, LtCol. US Army Ret. Agent Orange/Agent Purple/Agent Red etc./GWI/GWS recently summed up the tactical warrior class situation, "They (leadrship) are just waiting for us all to die." :-)
