Your posting made me grin--"been there" in the sense of battling something at the highest level of frustration, only to be confronted with a reminder that it isn't, after all, literally life-threatening. I hope your basement soon stopped "making water" or that a Johann-figure appeared to save the day! I recommend a sump-pump, by the way; we've got one in our cellar (something of an anomaly in Santa Rosa, California) and it's literally bailed us out countless times.
