If you would like to read about what happened AFTER the story in Das Boot, Buchheim wrote a sequel called Die Festung (The Fortress) which is about the winding-down phase of the war. You do all realize that the tragic ending of Das Boot was fiction, don't you? Unfortunately, Die Festung has never been translated (to put it into English is a pipedream of mine which will probably never be realized) but if you can read German, and want to plow through almost 1500 pages, it's quite a fascinating, very personal account of the summer of 1944 as witnessed by a 26-year-old war corespondent.
