What is it that you don't like about Tom Clancy? Are you envious
of his success?
He's the father of "techno-thrillers" and started on his road to fame in 1984, when he wrote his first novel, "The Hunt for Red October."
As far as making a "Cold War" sub flick, no sub can compare to the
'silent history" of the USS PARCHE (SSN-683) which was recen tly retired in Bremerton, WA.
Commissioned in 1974 (ten years before "Hunt for Red October" was published), She spent 30 years and nineteen deployments
as Amrica's top espionage sub, earning the sub an unprecedented nine Presidential Unit Citations. The vast majority of ships never receive even one. PARCHE'S final resume also included 13 Navy Expeditionary Medals and 10 Navy Unit Commendations, all unprecedented numbers. PARCHE was the most decorated sub ever. That's the "cold war" sub a movie should be made of.........
PARCHE figured prominently in "Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold
Story of American Espionage" by Sherry Sontag and Chis Drew. (1998). Have you read it?
Btw, the USS NARWHAL (SSN-671) was the quitest nuclear-powered sub ever commisioned into the U.S. NAVY. She
was equipped with a power plant that did not use main coolant
pumps, and it was the forerunner of the reactor installed in the USS VIRGINIA (SSN-774).
