Hey, you irrational optimist!
Probably it would have been best to have pushed Die Festung at the time that the moveie of Das Boot first came out--with the slight problem that one would have had to see fourteen years into the future! It was first published in 1995. My prattle about translating it is of dubious value, since a) I'm not good enough to do more than a fairly clunky version for my family's (forced) enjoyment ("Oh, man, do I have to read more of THAT?" and b) anything with a wider reading audience would, of course, have to have the approval of the author and/or his publisher/agent.
How about those of you who are adept in German writing to the publisher and begging for a translation?
Oh well, it was just an idea . . .
