I, for one, loved 'die Festung'. I don't dislike the fact that it misses a true plot. For me, it just describes the author as he's staying afloat on the mad wave of a war (a wave that we know is going to come down hard) on his long roundtrip from Paris to Brest to Bordeaux to Paris. It describes 'what really happened, from day to day', in the sense that he just gathers experiences made by a few people in the remains of the Third Reich, whose occupants all know (but a lot publicly deny it for personal psychological and obvious political reasons) the end is inevitable and neigh.
What find really frustrating is that I STILL don't know if Simone was with the Résistance or not ;-)
