Since we've gotten a lot of mileage out of Die Festung, what person/novel/historical incident do you think would make the best film?
Herr Kummrow mentioned the Laconia. Certainly that would have the advantage of turning the usual lineup of "good guys" and "bad guys" upside down and inside out.
One very good story that doesn't involve submarines is the World War I encounter between the Carmania and the Cap Trafalgar. No villains in this one at all, if you've read The Ship that Hunted Itself. Great action, poignant back stories.
Does anyone else have a favorite?
