I agree, Meg. I also missed the scene where it is rumoured that the Kaleun has a relationship with a young female "Nazi" back home. This makes the Kaleun's character even more complex and interesting than it already is. On the one hand he is obviously and outspokenly anti-Nazi; on the other he does have an affair with one of them. Maybe this symbolises the complex relationship between the German Army at the time and the Nazi Party: not really liking one another, but at the same time and paradoxically also attracted to one another for various reasons. The Kaleun's affair informs a lot of his musings and brooding.
