Hello, you should know that he doesn't get the girl in the long run, neither in the film nor in real-life. What's absolutely infuriating is that all his letters to her, the ones he writes as the bosun comments on the realtionship in the long version, were tactfully returned upon announcement of his marriage and got burned by his mother so as not to prove a burden later on, and they must have been absolutely fascinating vignettes of on board life.
