I have just read your messages, and made some querying (Googleing?). Found a site with your answer: www.cawreckdivers.org/Wrecks/moody.htm
You are right. A real US DD was sunk for the movie. It was the Moody, a flush-decker that had been "prepared" to look like a German destroyer. Check the site, it even has an extract of the sinking scenes.
