Hello Barry Scully,
without trying to be picky or offending may I please inquire as to what you do know of LWB’s “real†performance in moving pictures be that on the “controls†or having lunch, conversation etc. with is fellow officers on board when on patrol in his boat. Because if you don’t how: “I can't honestly see anything of Lehmann-Willenbrock in JP's performance.â€; this statement of yours would precondition you know how LWB would have or has performed in any given sequence shown in the movie. Otherwise how else is one able to compare? Just looking at the pictures of the two I don’t think gives somebody the necessary clue as to why they would be so different on handling the same mission, because they depict only a split second of a longer lasting life – action.
If I may please, just for the sake of the argument, presuming not only LGB, who really adored LWB, but also Peterson both wanted to make sure JP acting as the basically sympathetic man to watch for the audience on such a patrol, as had been told us before via LGB’s book, I would think it for JP to be extremely helpful to meet this man in real life in order to perform his professional acting along the line as LWB impressed and/or guided him, which obviously does not exclude from point of view “the movie is the work of a great actor and a great Director working together.â€
Well now, let’s hope the Germans beat the French (sorry Jean – Noel Müller) in the semi-final of the Handball-World –Cup which starts in about 15 min.
You have a nice day.
Sincerely Yours
