I agree it could be helpful to an actor to meet and observe the person he is playing, but, correct me if I'm wrong, Prochnow is not playing Lehmann-Willenbrock. He plays an unamed commander. As I said in a previous post, I know little if nothing of L-W's personality, however if Der Alte as depicted in the book is based on the great man himself I find little resemblance to him in Prochnow's performance.
I remember the unbelievable popularity in the UK of the miniseries when it was first shown on BBC 2 all those years ago. To hear British people rooting for a German U-Boat to make it home was nothing short of amazing. JP was interviewed on BBC's Pebble Mill programme after the series ended and I'm sure he said that his portrayal was only loosely based on the real Commander. To tell you the truth I was just pleased that he wasn't really dead. "Now there's acting for you !"
