does anyone know if hlw's gute frau was the "nazi girl" mentioned in the novel, the luftwaffe pilot's widow, who wrote to him with green ink?
seems like a strange choice for someone as openly disenchanted with the party as hlw was portrayed as being, unless the truth is different.
i wonder how he liked having a "desk job." after the patrol described in the movie, hlw was reassigned to another base in france, as the base commander i think...he didn't do any sea patrols for about 2 years, until the allies were on the way and he had to make a run for norway. he seemed like someone who genuinely loved life at sea. i imagine a desk job would have been a challenge for him...i like to think he'd have preferred to serve on a school ship. he might have been surrounded by wet-benind-the-ears kids, but at least he'd have been at sea.
