hi volker! how was your trip to colorado?
i quite agree that peterson made the right choices in going with a german cast, and jp was very well cast; his performance is very impressive. i was just speculating about american actors who would have fit the role...and robert redford just doesn't. spencer tracy did, i think...and so did walter huston, and for the same reasons: a less than matinee-idol appearance, but a personal intensity which made for a compelling performer.
when you mentioned helmut grier, i knew i recognizrd the name...i did have to look him up. he was the devastatingly handsome baron in 1972's cabaret, with liza minnelli. he might have been too pretty also, unless he could be "dressed down," like charlize theron was for her academy award winning performance in "monster." otto sander, who appeared in "das boot" as thomsen, might have been a possibility also. i wonder if the actor's ability to speak english figured in? peterson was planning an international release for the film, and so it was ideal that jp speaks english well. does sander speak english? he probably does, but i don't know that for sure.
