Das Boot--Xmas cake.

In the scene on the luxury liner in Vigo, Spain the liner captain refers to Christmas cake as he munches it gluttonously in front of the U-boat captain. What exactly is Christmas cake? A generic term for fruitcake? And I see also in that scene what look like white powdered cakes==Does anyone know what those are? I don't mean to nitpick, I'm just curious.
