Did the search periscope have the same type of wires wrapped around its outer housing, like that seen on the attack periscope? Picture of what I'm referring to:

Was U-84's final bridge conversion (one flak gun on the bridge and another mounted on the deck) standard in all VIIB's, or was this flak arrangement unique to this one boat?

How exactly did bridge watches work for the U-boats in WWII? David Miller writes in his book that the 1WO and 2WO each did two four-hour shifts per day, and the Bootsmann and Obersteuermann each did a four hour-shift. He then goes on to say that men from the seaman branch (Matrosengefreiters and Matrosenobergefreiters?) individually did one four-hour watch on the bridge per day. Now, if it

Are there any pics/diagrams available of U-boat radar scopes or, barring that, those of radar scopes used by the Kriegsmarine in general?

Was the torpedo storage amount for the IXD-2 different than the IXC boats? The Current Order No. 60 of 1944 mentions the following: -4 in forward tubes -6 in forward racks -2 in aft tubes -2 in aft racks I am guessing that would mean an additional ten torpedoes were stored externally. How many would be stored in the forward deck containers and aft deck containers?

A belated thanks for the info! One more question here: was LuTII ever employed by Type VII or IX boats? Rossler makes mention of a G5e version for midget subs, but I can't find any info about its use with other boats.

Hello, I have a couple of questions about the duties of crewmen aboard type XXIs, namely: -How many men at a time were on watch in the motor and diesel compartments? Was it like with other U-boats? (Four men on the diesels, three on the motors) -In the control room, were the dive planes manned at all times? If not who manned them when the boat submerged? -How many men at a time typicall

To clarify my post up above, I meant to say "up until June 1942, there was no move to install such apparatus in U-boats." Sorry!

Yes, I know, a tricky topic, but I figured I'd ask nonetheless: when was FuMO29 first installed? The boats listed here on the page about radar would suggest sometime in early 1942, but Rossler writes that there "was no move to install such apparatus in U-boats" and that (in regards to FuMO29) "installation began in the autumn of 1942." Could someone please clarify this fo

I am trying to resolve some conflicting information I have about the installation and usage of FuMO61 'Hohentwiel.' Many Internet resources say FuMO61 was installed starting in March 1944. However, "The Encyclopedia of U-boats, From 1904 to Present" states it was first tested on U-742 in August of 1943 and that 64 sets were installed by the end of September 1943. Eberhard Ross

When did Lut torpedoes first come into use? Rössler writes that they became operational in February 1944, but Permanent Order No. 66 (22 January 1943) makes mention of Lut torpedoes ( ).

Thank you! Looking at the data for U-1108, it was commissioned late in 1944. Was the flakzwilling M42 (and the single-barrel version as well) a late-war weapon? If so, what time period did it start to be fitted to boats?

Could any of you tell me if any U-boats received the twin-barrel (flakzwilling) version of the 3.7cm M42 weapon before war's end, or were they all of the single-barrel type?

Hello, Are there crew lists anywhere for the Type XXI boats that were captured at the end of the war? I managed to find one for the Type IX but none for the XXI. Thanks!
