Personal information
Alois Zech joined the navy in 1925. He was an instructor in the Mine Warfare School from Oct 1937 to May 1940. Then he served with the 3rd Minesweeping flotilla until May 1941.
Zech joined the U-boat force and started his training in May 1941, finishing in Dec 1941. He went to serve with the 2. UAA training flotilla in Dec 1941, spending three months there.
In Feb 1942 Zech was to oversee new U-boat construction before taking command of the large mine-laying boat U-119 on 2 April 1942. On 6 Feb 1943 Zech left Kiel with U-119 for its first patrol. The boat arrived in Bordeaux, France on 1 April after 55 days at sea.
After completing the first patrol of U-119 in April 1943 Zech joined the 12th flotilla in Bordeaux as an adviser. In July he took position on the Naval Mines Inspectorate, serving there until the German surrender.
