The Kriegsmarine Uniforms

Oberleutnant (Ing.) The service-suit contains the following parts:

a jacket, a pair of trousers, a white shirt, a sash,

grey gloves, a dagger and a peaked cap.

The picture left shows an Oberleutnant (Ing.)

[Lieutenant senior grade (Engineer)], wearing his

service suit.

The Kapitän zur See (captain) on the right picture

weares his parade-uniform.

His rank was indicated by the four stripes and

"Epauletten" at the shoulders. The cap was called

"Zweispitz" and was not used in war time.

Kapitän zur See The picture left shows an Kapitän zur See

(captain), wearing the small service-suit with

his black peaked cap.

The right picture shows an Marinejustizrat

(Navy justice officer).

All badges, stripes and buttons on the uniforms for

Marinebeamte (navy officials) were silver.

Admiral Dönitz wearing his coat In wintertime, all officers, administration

officers and seargents, wearing a coat.

Normally all buttons were closed but Admirals

and Knights Cross holders don't close the first three

buttons.

The inside of the Admiralscoat was in lighter blue.

The picture right shows the Commander of U 30,

Olt.z.S. Fritz Julius Lemp, wearing an captured

british battle dress (!).

On board of the U-Boat only the commander wears

the white, peaked cap - an unwritten law.

The blue peaked cap was weared from October 1. to April 19. The white one at the other times. During the war many officers are only wearing the blue cap. Here are the different kinds of caps:


Admirals cap Admirals cap Peaked caps for Kommodore, Konteradmiral, Vizeadmiral, Admiral, Generaladmiral, Großadmiral.
Cap for staff-officer ranks Cap for staff-officer ranks The caps for "Stabsoffiziere" (staff-officer ranks): Korvettenkapitän, Fregattenkapitän and Kapitän zur See.
Cap for Lieutenants and Lieutenant Commanders Cap for Lieutenants and Lieutenant Commanders The caps for Leutnant z.S., Oberleutnant zur See and Kapitänleutnant.
Cap for Navy Officials Cap for Navy Officials The caps for "Marinebeamte" (Navy Officials). All badges are silver like that ones of the uniform.
