During 1943 14 U-boats were sent towards the Straits of Gibraltar in an attempt to enter the Mediterranean. 11 of those managed to complete their passage while 2 were sunk at Gibraltar and more 2 failed to complete their run and turned away.
At the end of 1943 Germany successfully put 53 U-boats in the Mediterranean.
