Summary

Narrated by Edward Mulhare, this short documentary encapsulates the U-boat war using a combination of archival footage and interviews. Herbert Werner (author of Iron Coffins) and John M. Waters of the U.S. Coast Guard share their experiences and views of the conflict's varying stages from 1939 through 1945. The archival and newsreel footage shows a brief glimpse of World War I U-boats in action, U-boat construction, U-boat crews performing an underwater escape training exercise, clips from contemporary propaganda films, a 1943 convoy battle, shots of the U.S. coast taken from U-boats during Operation Paukenschlag, and the capture of U-505.
