Summary

During an exercise at sea in front of La Spezia harbour, a submarine is rammed by a cargo ship and sinks. In semi-documentary style the film portrays the struggles of the crew and the waiting. In the end they are rescued by a newly-designed diving bell which is lowered to the stricken sub.
