5.0 out of 5 stars A fine first effort!

Author Dave Bouslog's first book is a winner! His enthusiasm bounces off of every page and one expects if the reader is just a bored high school student (as the author describes himself in the introduction) he will become a life-long submarining enthusiast. Bouslog's research is original and impressive, including interviews with USS Seahorse's famous commander, Slade Cutter and several crew members. More than just recording combat occurences, he also records what happened during liberties and the impact of American servicemen on the Australian homefront. Additionally, there is an afterword provided by celebrated submariner Edward L. Beach that sets the perfect ending to a heroic chronicle. This is a book which deserves a place on any bookshelf devoted to pigboats of any nation. Who knows but that it may inspire some teenager down the road to write his own submarine book someday?

5.0 out of 5 stars Ex-submariner rates this book Excellent!

Of all the submarine books I have read (and I have read many), this rates at the very top. The USS Seahorse was of the Balao Class, as was my own boat (USS Tiru, SS416 . . . although modified for the "Cold War"), so I could identify with each experience. The author was accurate in every way, even though he did not actually serve in the Silent Service. Dave Bouslog captures the very soul of us who chose to spend a good part of our lives under the sea. The story "moves", as Mr. Bouslog has an excellent command of the English laguage, and an accurate knowledge of the "Silent Service". This book is a hard act to follow.

"Maru Killer" is a great companion to book "Slade Cutter", by Carl Lavo
which is primarily about the Commander of USS SeaHorse.

MARU KILLER brings in detail comments and views of many enlisted Seahorse shipmates and adds an excellent new perspective to Seahorse patrol events including excerpts from oral interview remarks by Commander Cutter.

My uncle served on this submarine so my mother wanted it in the family as a part of our history. The book was in great condition and received it quickly.

I thoroughly enjoyed Maru Killer; it provided me with a greater understanding of my Uncle's experiences in the war. And I now understand why he always had such great affection and loyalty for the crew of the USS Seahorse.
