Anton Staller was a U-boat lookout, rising no higher than Leading Seaman and his account of the war from the lower ranks is unique. He served on the Type IXc/40 boat, U-188 under Kapitänleutnant Lüdden on three patrols witnessing the stark reality of convoy warfare from his lookout position on the conning tower of his submarine. His U-boat sank the British destroyer HMS Beverley and eight merchant ships exceeding 100,000 gross tons but the submarine also spent many hours submerged under depth-charge attacks. More so than many of his contemporaries, Staller was prepared to reveal his thoughts and feelings of his experiences of the war at sea, and of his time on the conning tower, at the hydrophons, and cleaning weapons as a messboy. His journal demonstrates how political thinking rarely entered the minds of the U-boat men, even though many of them, such as Lüdden, did not choose to serve in submarines. Staller was not a Nazi and came from a Socialist Party background, yet he never questioned the cause he was fighting for. To Staller it was simply Us or Them to the death .

About the Author

ANTON STALLEN, a trained organ builder, came from a family with strong pacifist, socialist and anti-Hitler sentiments, but in September 1941 at age 17 he surprised everybody by volunteering for the German Navy. He wanted to serve aboard a surface ship but was sent to the U-boat Arm. His principal duties aboard U-188 were as bridge lookout and hydroplane operator. He served aboard U-188 from the initial familiarization with the boat on the stocks until she was scuttled at the war's end. Klaus Willmann (b.1934) agreed that he would write Staller's memoirs and, after long hours of collaboration and reflection, Das Boot U-188 emerged in its first edition in 2008. This English translation, by Geoffrey Brooks, is of the second edition which appeared the same year.

    A delightful and spirited account wrote by U-boat sailor Anton Staller, enriched by a very commendable photographic section from the authors archives. Staller combines both detail allied to great wit when describing his comrades, his somewhat reserved Commander, and his combat tours aboard U-188. You will no doubt be keenly interested in his portrayal of the time he spent in Penang as part of the "Monsoon Fleet", and how the German sailors interacted with their Japanese hosts. You will be entertained by his and his crewmates fortuitous journey throughout the 1944 battlefields of France to gain further employment on new U-boats . A book with several memorable moments, wrote in a very engaging and highly readable manner.

    5.0 out of 5 stars U-boat book

    I bought this book because this u-boat actually sunk a ship the my uncle was on in WWII. He was in the navy at the time and was stationed on the General Chung with the Chinese Navy. The u-boat surfaced and he actually spoke with the Commandant of the ship. He said he spoke fluent English and asked questions about the ship and its contents. Then he wished him good luck and said some one should be by to rescue him. He was in the ocean for 12hours. Fortunately it was summer and the water was warm.

    3.0 out of 5 stars ...under/overwater reportage
    Reviewed in Italy on 12 December 2022
    ...aside the plain description of the boat's mission that's not an "Le Carrè" narration but a through and detailed reckoning condensed from the boat's war diary (rare thing) and the annexed recollection of this U-boat veteran, these pages document us how this man ran from the late "doubtful" adolescence in the militar training to the acknowledged and forced adulthood;
    interesting how that guy and his fellow ran (on bicycle) toward Germany after leaving the base, a little odissey and the finally ridiculous tentative by the authorities to re-embark him in an old obsolete bathtub, right at the end of the game(!)

    Worthwhile.

    The book was a great personal description of the challenges of being a German submariner during WWII. It was easy and compelling reading. I would highly recommend taking the time to read this book.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Read from a Different Perspective
    Reviewed in the United States on 5 August 2016
    Practically all of the other books about the U-boats that we've read were written by the German U-boat commanders, so this one, written by an "ordinary seaman" gives the reader a different perspective, in particular from down inside the boat. It's very interesting, especially with regard to what happened to the crew after the War, how they went from the U-boat, having been given orders to "hand over" their boat to the Allies, from France to Germany on foot, and what happened to them after that. A fascinating read.

    Great story of what duty was like for an enlisted man in the opposing side.
