British Destroyers & Frigates: The Second World War and After Hardcover – 15 May 2006

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 107 ratings

Very well known author with a real following. The most comprehensive design history yet of modern British surface warships. Full technical details, with much new information and insight; many plans and photographs Since the Second World War the old categories of destroyer and frigate have tended to merge, a process that this book traces back to the radically different 'Tribal' class destroyers of 1936. It deals with the development of all the modern destroyer classes that fought the war, looks at the emergency programmes that produced vast numbers of trade protection vessels - sloops, corvettes and frigates - then analyses the pressures that shaped the post-war fleet, and continued to dominate design down to recent years. Norman Friedman is renowned for his ability to explain the policy and strategy changes that drive design decisions, and his latest book lives up to this reputation. Not content to merely describe the many classes in full technical detail, he uses previously unpublished material from his research in many archives to draw a new and convincing picture of British naval policy over the previous half-century and more. This is a book that everyone with a more than passing interest in British warships will want to read, and nobody professionally involved with navies can afford to miss.

NORMAN FRIEDMAN is one of the most prominent naval analysts in the United States. His work ranges from current strategic issues to naval history, but he is particularly known for his penetrating studies of warship design. A frequent visitor to British archives, he is as much at home dealing with the Royal Navy as American naval subjects - indeed, among more than twenty major books, is the best study of British carrier aviation ever written.

This book and it is a large one is worth every penny,The reason being not only does it go through the various rationals behind each design that (eventually) produced the ships that served the Royal Navy well after WW2.It also explains and illustrates with line drawings some of the designs that didn`t make it past the drawing board( some of these seem quite bizzare). There are also a range of drawings of ships that made it into service which are sharp and clear, these will be usefull to the naval modeller as well. The photo contents are good, the pictures bright and clear.Being ex RN,I found this book very good and brought back many happy memories. The technical details are good but not too deep for the average reader.

An excellent review of British Destroyers and Frigates from the late thirties on by Norman Friedman. A great companion volume to Rebuilding the Royal Navy by David K Brown.

This is an extremely comprehensive history of a topic which turns out to be much more elaborate and complex than one might have thought. Its fault is not lack of detail, but too much, which adversely effects the narrative flow. There is perhaps too much emphasis on the planning narrative, without sufficient of a historian's understanding of the need for explanatory background about the character of the institutions and individuals making controversial decisions. Although the book contains a comprehensive glossary, the acronyms, flow somewhat confusingly. The kindle edition lacks sufficient footnotes, and the diagrams are not clear enough. This would be a better work to read in a paper edition. It is interesting as a source for for a specialist in naval history; but perhaps not suited to (and to be fair not intended for) the general reader.

And who seems to know everything about British skimmers. This book it transpires. The armchair expert in question was fulsome in his praise.

    Norman Friedman
