Gallipoli: Attack from the Sea Hardcover – July 8, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
The Gallipoli campaign of 191415 is one of the events of the First World War that continues to seize imaginations today. The first modern seaborne landing of British, French, Australian, New Zealand, and Indian forces on a hostileand what proved to be a well-defendedpeninsula, the attack has been remembered for its many acts of individual heroism as well as its unprepared leaders.
Of particular fascination, and until now largely overlooked in historical accounts, are the naval dimensions of the campaign. The Navy's presence at Gallipoli crucially proved how influential submarine power could be. This absorbing book provides the only account of the complete Allied submarine and related German U-boat activity, integrated with a thorough analysis of the strategies and actions of all land, sea, and air forces. Incorporating patrol and technical reports and personal testimonies, Victor Rudenno's gripping narrative does full justice to the dramatic and inspirational battles in the Dardanelles.

The heart of the book is British submarine activity in the Dardanelles and the Sea of Marmara. It was totally unlike submarine warfare of the Atlantic in both world wars or the Pacific in the second. There was not yet sonar or depth charges to threaten subs, but antisubmarine nets, swift currents confounding estimates of location in the Dardanelles, and occasionally the sound of grappling hooks dragging across the sub menaced operations. Some captains and crews were extraordinarily talented and brave.
In the Sea of Marmara British subs attacked railroad trains or columns of marching troops. There were duals between subs and shore batteries. The eventual appearance of U boats in the Sea of Marmara introduced a new challenge for the British.
There are many maps and figures. If I ignored the other material and only rated the sections on submarine warfare the book would merit five stars. It is highly recommended.
Thus far there could be more maps as some of the place names in the text have no accompanying map.
Will post more as I continue into the text.
