U-571 Mass Market Paperback – April 4, 2000

Hell is Under Water

Their mission was a audacious and daring as it was dangerous. A crew of American sailors in a disguised submarine would rendezvous with U-571--a crippled German U-boat in enemy waters--storm aboard, and capture one of the Nazis' coveted Enigma encryption machines, a device that would allow the Allies to decode secret German transmissions. The planning was meticulous. The secrecy was airtight. Every eventuality was prepared for. Except one.

Now, with their own sub lying in pieces on the Atlantic floor, an unseasoned young U.S. naval officer and a handful of his men are trapped in a limping enemy boat trying to make its way across a thousand square-mile killing zone. Suddenly they are the hunted prey of the Reich's killer ships, and the target of Allied bombers. They have a prize in their possession that can turn the tide of the savage global conflict once and for all. And they have nowhere to run. While on a secret mission targeting the Nazi "Enigma" encryption device, a team of American sailors and marines poses as the German rescue team for a crippled submarine. But before they can grab the device and escape, the real rescue unit arrives and destroys their American vessel. Now they are forced to secretly navigate the malfunctioning submarine through enemy lines. This Dino De Laurentiis production is written and directed by Jonathan Mostow (Breakdown), and stars Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel and Jon Bon Jovi. While on a secret mission targeting the Nazi "Enigma" encryption device, a team of American sailors and marines poses as the German rescue team for a crippled submarine. Very good movie...

I have read the reviews of this book and I have to laugh, some of you take these things too seriously. Yes U-571 is a work of fiction, don't complain, it doesn't hold itself out to be anything other than fiction. And for the British people getting so upset that we Americans are using their deeds as our own, you need to read up on your history, the US Navy Captured and returned U-505 on June 4,1944. You guys are missing the point of the movie, or any movie for that matter, they are made to entertain, not to educate, so chill out. This is a good book and a good movie. For anyone reading this who is thinking about reading the book or seeing the movie, ignore these nit-picking crybabies and read the book or see the movie.

I love the movie, so I had to get the book! There seems to be more action in the book, but the action that is onscreen in the movie, is amazing!

Very amateurish, embarrassing reading. I couldn't take more than a quarter of the book, then had enough. The story line is ridiculous, and almost laughable, a real insult to German intelligence, like they couldn't identify one of their own up close? Come ON! The best stories of the U-boats are the real ones, the ones that really happened. If you're considering this book, be prepared to waste your time with total nonsense.

I read this book a dozen times and it seems to be one of Collin's greatest works...I seen the movie a dozen times and Collins did a great job on describing the reactions, the troubles, tense feelings, joyous feelings,I read through it at an wondorful pace, because of the writing style...His way of writing this book grabbed me it made me want to cry when Skipper was singling Andrew to dive and he left in the frezzing waters of the Atlantic...

read this if you're not a "reader" since it is action driven, typical movie-tie in. (why is that a writer can't write an awesome novel from a film screenplay?) For a beautiful, wrenching, haunting tale about life on the sea read "The Last Ship".
