Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Does factual history make for good fiction? Well, yes and no in this military novel with strong spiritual themes. Father John Washington, Rev. Clark Poling, Pastor George Fox and Rabbi Alex Goode are thrown together on the doomed army transport ship Dorchester in February 1943. As Nazi U-boats lurk just beneath the surface of the western Atlantic, waiting to intercept and destroy ships that pass within torpedo range, spiritual battles take place on board the Dorchester. Not, however, among the clergy. Despite their diverse religious traditions Catholic, Jewish, Methodist and Reformed Protestant the four chaplains find a consistent unity of purpose in boosting the spirits of the military men under their care. Indeed, the spiritual unity is unbelievably idyllic: some disagreement or tension among the four might have made their relationship more convincing. However, the final sacrifice they make based on true accounts is undisputedly inspiring. The novel's strength lies in its detailed depiction of a heavily researched historical event; this is also a weakness, as the reader often feels more like a history pupil than a participant in the adventure. This story might have been better presented as nonfiction. Still, history buffs who prefer a Christian theme in their novels will be happy to find a new offering in the limited pool of titles available to them, and WWII fans will enjoy this retelling of the sinking of the Dorchester.

From Library Journal

Amid the secrecy surrounding military transports during World War II, four military chaplains board the U.S.A.T. Dorchester to minister to the 902 soldiers there. George Lansing Fox, a Methodist minister; Alexander D. Goode, a rabbi; Clark V. Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister; and John P. Washington, a Catholic priest, are men of different faiths, ages, and backgrounds drawn together by an unswerving belief in God. As they show their concern and faith each day, they begin to shape a miracle in one man's heart that will blossom on February 3, 1943, the day a German U-boat torpedoes the Dorchester and the chaplains make a final sacrifice for the crew. While the details about the men's lives prior to boarding the Dorchester are rather dry, Poling (a cousin of one of the ministers) and Wales (a screenwriter for the TV show Christy) pack enough emotion into the rest of the novel to more than compensate. For fans of military fiction and the movie Saving Private Ryan.

This is one of the best books I have ever read, it is very riveting will keep you on edge while you read it , if it weren't for these four chaplains all of different faith , when the USS Dorchester went down in icy waters off the coast of Greenland during WWII they gave their life jackets away to give hope to a few more people from certain death. This book is a true story of the four Chaplains that gave their best and their lives in the worst of a very bad situation. You have got to love these men and they really did do GODS work in a time of extreme danger

Quick delivery. No excess packaging. The book arrived unscathed and ready for me to read on this snowy New England evening.

This is one great story to come out of WWII, I went to a memorial for these four Chaplin's that gave their lives for their fellow man, no greater gift! They do this Memorial every year near the Feb date that the USAT Dorcester went down with 900 Army men onboard. They hold it every year in Rocklin CA at William Jessup University.

The story of the four chaplains was included in our reading book in 8th grade. That's over 50 years ago. It is a story that has always stuck in my memory and I was glad to find even a fictionalized account of the sacrifice of these brave men. It is a quick read and a good one to share with younger generations who are looking for real heroes.

Good book if one knows nothing about the four chaplains aboard the Dorchester. Very detail oriented and goes into backgrounds well. Target audience is middle aged, Judeo-Christian background.

I found this book made me realize just how much others have sacrificed for our freedom. The characters were real to me...much more so than going to a movie where it's like watching the news when bad things happen. We're anesthesized to the horror happening to others. I spent the day reading (such luxury!) and felt I had spent the day on the Dorchester. Knowing beforehand what the book was about initially disappointed me, yet I read on to see how the authors would handle this true story. I was glad I did. The account was very real to me. The sacrifice of the four chaplains was beyond reason...so far so that faith was in the forefront. If you are serious about history, this is a must read.

I have purchased and given at least 10 of these novels to Chaplains and ministers of the
American Legion and will continue to do so each year as we remember the Four Immortal Chaplains in a special ceremony.

I was really looking forward to this true story - most of the book was taken up with what the chaplains had been doing before joining the Dorchester so that by the time you got to read about what actually happened the book was almost at an end! I felt cheated!
