August 1939 was a time of great flux. The fear of impending war fueled by the aggression of Nazi Germany forced many changes. Young people pursuing academic research were plunged into an entirely different kind of research and development. For Bernard Lovell, the war meant involvement in one of the most vital research projects of the war-radar.

Echoes of War: The Story of H2S Radar presents a passionate first-hand account of the development of the Home Sweet Home (H2S) radar systems during World War II. The book provides numerous personal insights into the scientific culture of wartime Britain and details the many personal sacrifices, setbacks, and eventual triumphs made by those actively involved.

Bernard Lovell began his work on airborne interception radar in Taffy Bowen's airborne radar group. He was involved in the initial development of the application of the 10 centimeter cavity magnetron to airborne radar that revolutionized radar systems. In the autumn of 1941, the failure of Bomber Command to locate its target over the cloudy skies of Europe prompted the formation of a new group to develop a blind bombing system. Led by Lovell, this group developed the H2S radar system to identify towns and other targets at night or during heavy cloud cover. H2S first saw operational use with the Pathfinder Squadrons in the attack on Hamburg during the night of January 30-31, 1943. Two months later, modified H2S units installed in Coastal Command aircraft operating over the Bay of Biscay had a dramatic tactical effect on the air war against U-boats. The tide had begun to turn. In this fascinating chronicle of the H2S radar project, Sir Bernard Lovell recreates the feel and mood of the wartime years.

Lovell is trying to give not only technical detail, but a view of the administrative problems that beset a system that everbody wanted ASAP. Hidden in the mass of detail are the development of RADAR at shorter and shorter wavelengths, some of the things it was used for, and how some of the administratve bullheadedness complicated the actualization of the system. In reading this book, it is necessary to keep several threads in mind simultaneously. Fascinatig, but difficult.

Like Bowen and Watson-Watt (see my reviews) Lovell played key part in wartime radar development, and like Bowen went into radio astronomy after 1945 (Jodrell Bank etc). Though tone of book dry it is therefore a valuable source for the technically-minded. As Lovell shows, H2S was vital to Allied bombing--even more so than "Oboe". No H2S no Hamburg, Dresden, but also more concentrated and genuinely strategic raids.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved every page in this book

As an old radar fitter, one of the last to be trained on H2SMk4, I loved every page in this book. It brought so much back. Some of it could be hard going if you are unfamiliar with the old technology, but if you read it from a "people" angle rather than a technical point of view, you will still find it a good read. Chapter 12 was written by Mrs Lovell. All versions of H2S are described, and life in the time of World War 2 is very well illustrated. I will read
it again.

A factual account of a seminal time in the advancement of radar technology. Fascinating. It can never happen again. We owe all of cellular radio to the progress made at this time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read it if you have a PhD in electronics. Or because it is an unknown part of WW2

I have an engineering degree but had to keep stopping to research just how some of the technical items described work. Nevertheless, I rate it highly for two reasons:
1 the description of how radar, and especially H2S, was developed almost despite the pettiness of some of those involved
2 we all know about the fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain and Operation Chastise aka The Dam Busters of 617 Squadron, but very few people are aware of how important radar was to the British war effort in so many forms;
accurate bombing, interception of German night bombers, and the Battle of the Atlantic to name just the main areas
