Editorial Reviews
Review
"This new book looks at the U.S. failure to protect its merchant ships during the first months after joining Britain in the war against the Nazis - Very Highly Recommended." --FIRE Reviews
"There is much to admire in this book. The chapters dealing with the city of New York are particularly good and look at 'cultural' issues which have rarely been highlighted in earlier histories of the campaign." --Warship
"Brown has written a superior book … [with] an intelligent selection of photographs." --The Australian Naval Institute

First, much and perhaps most of the book has nothing to do with the subtitle, “Why The US Was Unprepared For War In The Atlantic.” For example, there is an interesting chapter about the German navy at war, another about merchant ship production and, in another chapter, extensive discussion about US Navy collaboration with the mafia in New York City, but none of this remotely explains why the US was unprepared. Perhaps the book was written with a different title/subtitle in mind. You may still want to read the book – just don’t expect it to focus a whole lot on US unpreparedness. And, if your interest is the actual “U-Boat assault on America,” read Operation Drumbeat by Michael Gannon.
Second is the matter of factual errors. The population of New York City did not represent 18% of total US population in 1941. President Roosevelt was not inaugurated in December 1932 and a submarine’s pressure hull (especially in WW II era U-Boats) does not provide “streamlining” for the boat (the superstructure/outer shell outside the pressure hull provided what “streamlining” there was). While individual factual errors are inconsequential, one has to wonder what other errors are lurking that didn’t jump out at the reader. The author was not well served by whoever did his fact checking/proof reading.
