4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

Published to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of the landings at Normandy, this reprint of a classic work offers a superb appraisal of the Allies' naval contribution to the largest amphibious operation in history. The author examines the ships, strategic and tactical planning, the channel voyage, landings on both American and British beaches, the Mulberry Harbours, the great storm, and looks at the invasion from the perspective of amphibious operations throughout World War II. With the huge range of craft detailed and supporting plans and action photographs, this reprint is the best available account of Operation Overlord. 164 pages. 140 illustrations. Hardcover. 8 1/2 x 11 inches.

Top review from the United States

This is very good general book on the major ships used in the Normandy invasion. It discusses warships and landing craft, the Mulberry artificial harbors, and the naval support for the beach landings. A couple of chapters discuss the Allied naval planning and operations for the invasion. There are lots of historical black and white photos.

There are various tabulations of warship and landing craft characteristics and performance.

This is a well presented book on a part of D Day not that well written about. The various navies obviously played an essential part in the operation and this book covers it quite well .There is a limit to what can be contained in a smallish book but this has covered quie a lot.
