This view of the war from the mess deck of a fleet tug is far different from those written from a flag bridge vantage. A Navy radio man, Ted Mason recalls his years of action in the Pacific with candor and humor, offering perceptive evaluations of shipmates and exhibiting cool skepticism toward his leaders. The USS Pawnee rescued many ships during her 25-month tour of the South and Western Pacific, and this story of the heroics performed by her crew makes intriguing reading.

The follow up to Mason’s better known “Battleship Sailor”, this narrative takes us farther and deeper into the day-to-day world of an ordinary seaman on a smaller US Navy ship in the South Pacific during WWII. While much is of the book covers the minor internal strife and challenges of a navy CPO, it is well written and flows smoothly.

Personally I found this narrative more “real” than the somewhat boisterous “Battleship Sailor” book. In this book we go to war in a small ocean going tugboat, face the oppressive climate, and face good and bad commanding officers. I recommend this book for its genuine character.

This is a follow up book to the authors Battleship Sailor which followed his enlistment through his service in the USS California at Pearl Harbor. This book details his service in the fleet tug, USS Pawnee. The service of these little known ships was interesting to read about. I have read countless books about World War 2 written by generals, admirals, and historians. However, I thoroughly enjoy reading books like these from the perspective of an enlisted man who lived through it.

From 1942 to 1945 in World War II the author served on one of the countless smaller ships that are so necessary to support the more glorious large warships. He saves praise for those who really earned it, and honesty for those, regardless of rank, who performed less well. The book is well researched for accuracy and so the reader can fit the author's viewpoint into the chaotic pattern of war. It is well-written and very informative. Theodore Mason was an intelligent man, an astute observer, and a talented writer.

I picked this book up after reading Mr. Mason's excellent "Battleship Sailor" and was thoroughly engrossed. Although the subject matter may not be as compelling to the casual reader, his story of an unsung workhorse of the fleet and its Sailors is as entertaining and insightful as his previous work. Mr. Mason may come across as preachy at times, but he doesn't pull any punches. Excellent story and a highly recommended read for anyone interested in history, the Navy, or 'Tin Cans'.

There are hundreds of war diaries floating around in cyberspace; the greatest challenge is choosing that one book worth your time, effort, and money! Some diaries are just travelogues interspersed with moments of sheer terror. Others read like action reports; the vessels, the participants, supplies and ammunition used, locations and time. Theodore C. Mason's writing style and observations pull you in; these are real people he is talking about. This is the first book of his I have read, it will not be the last!

Excellent book about serving on an ocean going tug boat in WWII.
Really hits home about doing your duty and following through as well as proving that it really is a team effort.
Shows a less glamorous side of naval service but also shows the important role that they played in winning the war.
Good read.

This book was a gift to a friend who likes history. She said that it gave her information she'd not seen before, the book was easy to read, and that she'd definitely keep it in her library. I admit that I skipped through it before I gave it to her, and I agree. There's a lot of info we don't get in school!
