Drawing from accounts by his father and other former crew members as well as documentary records, Sasgen offers a dramatic account of the US submarine in the Pacific during World War II, where she sank more tons of enemy ship than all but one other sub. Includes a few diagrams, but no maps. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Peter Sasgen is the author of thirteen books. His subjects range from naval history, particularly submarine warfare during World War II and the Cold War, to novels of international intrigue. His latest novel, ILLUMINATIONS, is set in the vicious and often unscrupulous international art world of Paris.

Sasgen started writing shortly after the death of his father, who'd served in submarines in the Pacific during the war. With a lifelong interest in submarines, Sasgen realized that his father's experiences had the makings of a great adventure story. He wrote what became RED SCORPION, THE WAR PATROLS OF THE USS RASHER, his first book published in 1995.

After RED SCORPION, ideas for new stories just kept coming. A novel set in post-war Berlin (THE DAYS OF KiILLING), a trilogy of the new Cold War (THE BLOOD OF LOST EMPIRES; THE MAN IN THE GLASS BOX; THE WHITE WOMAN), and eight more titles followed.

The concept for ILLUMINATIONS derived from Sasgen's experience as an artist and photographer after graduation from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. His photographs are in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, and in private collections in the U.S. and Europe. He and his wife live in St. Augustine, Florida.

USS Rasher was my first submarine duty. I reported aboard in 1964 as a 3rd Class Electrician. I didn't know any of the history of the boat even though there were a few "old timers" still onboard. My name was immediately changed to NQP (nonqualified puke) and remained the same until I completed qualification. Qualification was a full time job after my electrical duties. Charging batteries (Rasher had two) and hopping cell gravities each morning was one of my tasks. Our test depth was 312 feet and the hull would creak and grown at that depth. I spent many watches on the helm in the conning tower and it was especially lonely on the mid watches on the surface all by myself in a darkened compartment. I spent many hours crawling around in the bilges tracing various piping systems, making my own drawings and getting checkouts. We had no deck guns anymore and I can't imagine having 20mm, 40mm and 5" guns mounted topside and actually shooting them. No air conditioning in the south Pacific must have been a miserable time for those guys. Anyway it was very enlightening reading about the Rasher's history and if you're interested in subs, it's a very good book to read.

The descriptions of combat were great! However, not as detailed as my Dad used to tell. If they had been, the book would have been too long, I guess! He was on the boat with Capt. Nace and I think Adams just before Nace. I wish I had known about this book before my Dad died. I had hoped to read the incident when my Dad cursed at a visiting Exec. when the Exec. didn't respond to his call "Periscope of starboard bow!" Capt. Nace heard the commotion and came on the bridge: "What's going on!" Dad: "Periscope off the starboard bow!" Capt. Nace: "LEFT FULL RUDDER!" After chewing out the Exec. He chewed out my Dad for speaking that way to an officer.
My Dad was greatly disappointed when he visited the sub on display in Charleston and learned the Rasher had been scrapped. He felt that with her record she should have been on display. (But, I recently learned she had a lot of alterations post war and saw a lot of service. Also, I wish he had known that her conning tower, that he stood lookout on so much now stands at the sub school in New London, CT).
Oh! That reminds me. My Dad fell coming down for an emergency dive once, and Capt. Nace picked him up and dropped him down that hatch on the conning tower!

This book provides a wonderful protrayal of life onboard a WW II fleet submarine. The essential facts about a submarine's systems, equipment and operational environment are carried forth on top of the human experience of a submarine sailor. The author provides abundant technical detail without ever losing site of the human aspects of war. Through the use of abundant first person information from the veterans themselves this book comes alive and makes you feel as if you are part of the crew. For me this is WW II history at its best. While this book is a specific history of a single submarine it also provides a representative picture of life aboard a WW II submarine. Such unit and ship's histories are so much more readable than the battle monographs or big picture campaign histories that the publishers seem to prefer.

This is a well written and very well researched WWII sub story. Author does a great job in describing each of the patrols, skippers, and story of the Rasher, on which his dad served, whether good, bad, or otherwise. From extremely productive patrols to lifeguard duty, this boat experienced it all. I recommend it.

Great account of the history of the Rasher (Red Scorpion) during the war. Interesting to learn about how these brave captains made decisions about attacking the enemy's ships. Fascinating!

The “paperback” version I thought was clearly lacking pics not only of the Rasher, but of the Japanese opponents/targets ships and the maps were rudimentary.

This book helped me fill in the missing information about my father's experiences on the Rasher; details that he never discussed. So sad that he never got the chance to read this.

Great book. A good balance of personal histories along with how submarines worked and fought in World War II. I've read a number of these, and this is one of the best!
