U-604 may have looked like the hundreds of other Type VIIC U-boats built by the Nazi Kriegsmarine during World War II, but her six wartime patrols were far from ordinary. This book draws on the eyewitness testimony of survivors and the boat s war diary to weave a detailed tapestry of life and action on U-604 during some of the fiercest convoy battles of the Atlantic war. She was credited with many successes, among them inflicting the largest single loss of U.S. mercantile personnel in one attack. The success of her career, however, pales beside the epic story of her loss. The boat was damaged beyond repair after repeated bombing by American aircraft, and her commanding officer organized an amazing but tragically unsuccessful rescue attempt by two other U-boats in their wolfpack. Many of the book's photos have not been published previously.

Solid effort from U Boat Archive Author

Solid effort from U Boat Archive Author
No Ordindary War is an exceptionally well written and documented account of one German U Boat, the U 604. Written by Christian Prag who works in the U Boat archives in Germany the author provides the reader with the compelling story of one U Boats experiences during WWII. With total access to the archives and the help of a few surviving crew members from the boat the books narrative follows the boat and crews experiences from their training to the boats eventual sinking by US forces. In between the boat manages to survive several patrols and a number of harrowing combat experiences. Aside from the research and information the author was able to dig up on the boat the author apparently used the archives well to come up with numerous photos of U 604 and its crew. Ive owned many U Boat books and except for one or two photos I dont think I have ever seen any of the others and there are numerous ones throughout the book. As of this writing the book is not inexpensive but the quality and story make it worth the purchase price. Highly recommended !!!

This is by far the best book yet about the bravery and history of U-boat crews during War World II. It details the entire career of U-604 from construction to scuttling with over 100 unpublished photos. It is told by surviving crewman and the fears of being attacked as well as it's victorys. You will not be dissappointed with this book.
