A leading British naval authority looks at the declining fortunes of the once invincible U-boat arm of the German Navy that had seriously threatened the Allies with defeat in the early years of World War II. To tell the story he focuses on U-223, commanded by Karl-Jürgen Wäether and commissioned in Kiel in January 1943. The submarine's murderous fourteen-month career, which ended dramatically in the Mediterranean in March 1944, is fully examined, and its exploits viewed in the wider context of the time. 256 pages. Hardcover. 6 x 9 inches.

I found myself pulling for the U-Boats and against the allies. Goog story telling. Hope to find a similar book.

For the naval history buff, Twilight of the U-Boats is an interesting account of the war at sea during the latter part of WW II. It is generally presented from the German perspective, but neatly switches across to the other side too paint the full picture of specific engagements. Very easy to read.

Good background reading. Lots of facts and details. But ccertainly not the tour de force that it was intended to be. Still, good reading.

From the first shot fired by Nazi U boats to their final humiliation in 1945 Edwards takes the reader through Admiral Donetz boats years long effort to cut Great Britton's life line with America. The struggle between the vessels attempting to beat the U boats was a cruel and brutal affair and that is conveyed in spades by author Edwards.

This book is another Uboat book, but its like most others on the subject, it starts OK, but then goes into each convoy sinkings, fine but after most of the book one gets bored of "getting position, firing, the sinking of the ships then naming them," I realise this is the book but, each convoy attacked is treated in the same way and no finite details are given, its impossible each attack is very similar.
The book also try's to give a story of a particular boat but again it glosses over the details, I am afraid I was disapointed , but it is in my library along with others on the subject and I will read it regularly.

Enjoyed this book with lots of information about the WW II U-boat battles. It is amazing how many U-boats went forth and how changing technology, code breaking, and tactics altered the battle from one of massive U-boat victories to one of ultimate defeat. A very interesting read of submarine and anti submarine warfare and the brave souls above and below the sea.

having read many books about U boats and US fleet submarines, I found this to be one of the best…I like it so much that I am looking
for another book by the same guy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Torpedo Los! Bernard Edwards launches another winner
Reviewed in Canada on January 11, 2019
I have a small library of books related to the Battle of the Atlantic and in particular the U-boats. Bernard Edwards has a number of titles published related to this conflict, and this is another winner. For those that are really into the u-boat conflict, I highly recommend this one. It covers in fair detail the career and eventual fate of one crew and its commander during the latter half of the war, at a time when the u-boats were the hunted more so than the hunters. The story contains some details that I haven't come across elsewhere, such as the u-boat in question being so badly damaged by depth charges that her commander surfaces and orders crew to get ready to abandon. They do this in plain sight of an enemy destroyer which promptly leaves them to their fate and sails off to rejoin its convoy. Said u-boat commander and crew promptly get to work and make repairs, living to fight another die. When one considers that the majority of u-boats and their crews were sunk during the war, the reality is that it could have been much worse if the crews hadn't been as skilled and resourceful as they were when faced with the damage they took. Quite the story!

4.0 out of 5 stars All good, considering.

Given the circumstances and time since these events occurred; the typically abrupt and final nature of a U-Boat's demise, the sack of Berlin in 1945, the rise and fall of the Eastern Bloc with the associated technological arms-race (much of it based on the advanced German work), it is a wonder that the author was able to write this book at all.

It charts the gradual shift in fortunes of the U-Boat fleet from the 'happy time' of 1942, through to late '44 - by which time it was very unlucky indeed to be sunk by a U-Boat, such was the Allied dominance of the shipping lanes, and advancements in Anti-Submarine warfare. This is done through the perspective of the extraordinarily lucky Wachter, Commander of U-223, and based on his boat's log (presumably now in the Bundesarchiv).

Not necessarily a standalone book, but would compliment any enthusiast's collection, and make good reading whilst working through the Das Boot series/film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the Battle of the Atlantic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 2, 2013
Found this book a very interesting read, it's actually my first proper book dealing with the Battle of the Atlantic, and it's giving me a good insight as to what it was like, what the stakes were, and it also opened my eyes as to how powerful the U-Boat armada was, and how close the allies came to disaster.

I found the early part of the book very interesting, but some of the middle chapter did feel a bit repetitive at one point, but the story envetually got extremely gripping and I just couldn't put the book down. Those never ending chasses between destroyers and uboats are absolutly facinating.

This book though is a great read, I've learned loads with it and it has opened my eyes to this part of the war which I had largely ignored. One thing I found is it brings the fact that so many sailors on the allies' convoys died horrible deaths, which are largely forgotten, and these men should be seen as heroes just as, say the RAF fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain, or bomber crews etc...

I'm happy I'll be looking into reading more of this subject! In fact, I just got The Road to Russia - Artic Convoy 1942 from the same author to read now!
