- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2010This book starts out with how the Kriegsmarine had a choice in the kind of men it needed for its purpose. It follows the men through basic training, both EMs and Officers, to life aboard a ship and life in land units. It is interesting how the men on smaller boats like Minesweepers and Destroyers had an overall better comradeship and bond but experienced virtually no success(Destroyers) or recognition of success (Minesweepers) due to the constant break downs in the problem plagued boilers. On the Battlecruisers and Battleships, the men were a great deal more formal, strictly disciplined, and had a lesser bond but enjoyed more success, then eventually were killed in the war. This book is great for answering many questions like pay, rations, discipline, training, everyday life, life on different kinds of ships, and late war land units. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting to know about the men of this lesser known part of the Wehrmacht.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2013I heartily recommend this book as an excellent base for further research for anyone interested in investigating the sailors of the Kriegsmarine. However, if your interest is fleeting, then this is a good book to add to your library.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very little, very little material..
I was not blown away by this book. I find the author out of focus most of the time. There is very little on the men of the Kriegsmarine.
There is actually not much on German Seamen themselves. The author looses too much pages dealing with out of focus subjects like the operational history of the various German boats which is not really dealing with the men manning them.
I also found the author diverting too much on sailor's uniforms. You get to know some very particular details on some uniforms or parade dressings but you are left in the dark with some basic information such as what were they eating? Half of the photograph captions have a comment on their uniforms.
Another example is when the author deals with S-Boats. You get a page or two on their operational history, armament, etc. their kills, their weaknesses, etc but nothing about the men themselves. I thought that was the objective of this book.
Same for the land forces. I would have liked to find out more about them, where were they leaving, who were they?
Since there are plenty of other osprey books on the German navy, their operational history, technologies, etc. I would have hoped this one to focus only on the men.
There is not much space so it should be used well.
More positively, the first third is relatively informative and well written.
My advice is do not buy unless second hand at a low price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Angehörige der Deutschen Kriegsmarine
Ein einfach gehaltenes Buch mit allgemein Plätzen. Mangelnde Bild wiedergabe.
wird der ehemaligen Kriegsmarine nicht gerecht.
