Oskar Heinz Kusch, joined the German Navy in 1937. He worked his way successfully through naval college and eventually volunteered for duty in U boats. During this period the underwater service was causing havoc to Allied shipping in the Atlantic and was highly regarded as an elite force. He had an exemplary service record, and eventually he gained his own command in the 2nd U boat Flotilla. Before his second operational voyage as Captain three new junior officers joined the submarine, they were confirmed Nazi patriots and not popular aboard, constantly praising all the heroes of Reich and never conceding that the demise of the U boat was approaching due to the increased use of more sophisticated radar techniques used by the Allies. The voyage was to prove unsuccessful in terms of Allied ships sunk and unbeknown to Kusch the three hatched a plan to dishonour their Captain and accuse him of treason.

The trial was corrupt and rigged. No latitude was given from higher authorities and no account of his previous unblemished career was taken into consideration. To the amazement of the court, orders were given that Kusch was to be shot.

An in-depth account of the trial and subsequent execution of Oskar Kusch, u-boat commander, and the events leading up to the execution. A bit wordy and somewhat disjointed in places, the book does not flow smoothly as a continuous narrative. Non the less, an interesting account which includes notes on u-boat training and life in the u-boat officer corps. An especially good description of the intricacies of the German naval judicial system at the time. Coupled with the rather bogus accusations made by three junior officers who were devout Nazis, the reader can easily see that Kusch (who was not a devout Nazi) was rail-roaded. If you are looking for a foot-note about u-boats and not just the battle of the Atlantic in general or stories of the u-boat aces, this book is for you.

This book gives a glimpse into the world of the German U-Boat Navy. Hard and thorough training. Many rejects.Men always waiting to join.Hard Nazi inner polotics; "Death to anyone insulting Hitler". Portrasys the demise of a good military man
"Denounced" by two inept officers because of disciplinary action taken by skipper. Great reading for those WW2 U-Boat buffs.

When we first got into the book, we were DELIGHTED; it was so exciting we couldn't put it down. But then came the inevitable execution (which was horrible). From that point on, the rest of the book was superfluous. The author should have ended the book there -- or shortly thereafter, once the reactions of the murder, especially from the crew, were reported. We won't read it again.
