The Malta Force submarines had the vital task of interrupting German and Italian convoys crossing the Mediterranean to resupply Rommel and his Army in North Africa. The outcome of the Desert War depended on this.

Operations from the beleaguered island were hazardous both at sea and in port. The Naval Base was under constant air attack. Due to the courage and tenacity of the crews by the time the Malta-based submarines were at full strength a staggering 50% of Axis shipping bound for Africa failed to arrive at its destination. The submarines sank some 75 enemy vessels totaling 400,000 tons.

Periscope Patrol picks out the highlights of their actions and sets them against the bombed-out background of Malta, the island awarded the George Cross for its single handed stand. This is a hugely readable and informative account of submarine warfare at its toughest and roughest.

Wonderful telling of the few doing so much for the many. So many good men lost to help win the war.

This was a good book on an overlooked and vital part of ww2. The Mediterranean war against the Axis supply routes is not well covered in English publications and the part that the 10th Flotilla played was an important part of it. Appendixes that listed the individual successes of each sub and their patrols would have been very useful.

An excellent biography of the Malta Submarine Force during WW2 and those Officers and Sailors who put there lives on the line with every patrol.
Any submarine lover will enjoy this book of the RN Sub Service. I bought the kindle copy so it does take a bit longer to read.

A good, but not great book on Malta submarines, specifically the Tenth Flotilla. While interesting, the book is not especially informative in that the details (ship names, tonnage, etc.) are often missing and dates are not usually included. Originally published in 1957, the book is pretty much a memorial to the men of the Tenth Flotilla, especially Ian Wanklyn and E.P. Tomkinson.

The submarines of Malta the most bombed city on earth , The Malta subs had to be small and handy to be of any use in the dangerously shallow waters of the mediterranean sea ... These boats were small slow training subs the men who manned these subs made them do. These men achieved a victory it is a gripping tale of bravery fortitude and endurance far beyond the call of duty...
