During WWII over 250 Allied warships from a dozen navies were sunk by German U-boats. This groundbreaking study of 110 vessels provides a detailed analysis of every sinking for which source material survives from both the Allied and German sides. Representing the first large-scale publication of U-boat war diaries in any language, the book offers a wealth of new information, including the circumstances of the sinkings, the technical environment, and the fate of the crews.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Where the German view of the sinking is available, in 113 cases, the detail is astounding. Also the index is very complete, not only referring to the warships and men that were sunk by these boats, but any crew that were mentioned in the text, rescuing ships, merchantmen involved in both attacks during the event or in rescues, those in the Gazetteer, and so forth. A book well worth hunting for."--Starshell

i bought this book a few weeks back cause i have always been very interested in uboats, fascinated would be a better word, i have probably 50 books on u boats, this book is probably one of the best books i've ever owned, the book is big, coffee table size,it has 450 pages, the first part of the book deals with a history of u boats sinking warships in WW2, then it goes into procedures, an example of this is type of torpedos used, proper procedures on how to initiate a torpedo attack by using the TDC (torpedo data computer) and so forth, then the fun begins!! it has a massive list of warships sunk by u boats in ww2, each ship has a few pages devoted to it,it talks about when the ship was built, a brief history of the ship and when and how it was sunk, who sank it and how did it happen, when the submarine log detailing the incident survived its posted also, very fascinating, so if you like uboats get this book, it is out of this world,a note to modellers out there, nothing in here is good for modelling so don't buy this book for that, the pictures detailing the ships that were sunk are small and in black and white, this is a highly technical book and nothing to do with pictures or modelling so be aware of that before you plunk 70 dollars for it, the book is expensive but worth every penny for us u boat nuts out there.

A well written write up of each attack with both sides reflected where possible.
It is very 'matter of fact' in its write up which suits me but may not suit others. For me its a wonderful book and one I have been after for a while, the courage both sides showed is incredible in such tragic circumstances.

A treasure trove of information...This book is amazing!

They have sure done their research. Not only did they research all the German sources, they also checked into Allied sources on the same sinking. It helps eliminate my monolithic view of the Kriegsmarine. The various logs show a wide range of opinion and activity. My one complaint is the frequent reference to events discussed in the co-volume of this book.... which I can't otherwise find.

It is obvious that the author has gone through a very thorough process of research in the compilation of the data. This book is a must have for any serious historian dealing with U-boat warfare. Each attack is carefully presented and evaluated from the antecedents to its completion, excellent.

Extremely detailed narrative so rather dry reading. It is a book of reports so lacks "the human" side of the U-Boat sagas.

First Class reference book which provided the AXIS operational logs for specific U-Boats which are key to my family history research.

It was true attack logs written up as the attack happened. Reports after the event often unintentionally add items that did not take place or leave out events which did take place.

It tell some otherwise incomprehensible sequences and attack's methods (and fleeing).
It also refers punctually the launching system and the T5 characteristics (in the good introduction)
...useful.
