Interesting book about the Grey Wolves
Jak P. Mallman Showell is probably the foremost expert and author on German U-Boats during WWII. If you click on his name you will see all of his published titles it includes about 15 books about the Grey Wolves with 2 more I see coming out later this year. I have owned at one time almost all of his books and U-Boat Commanders and Crews I feel might be the best one. As the title suggests the focus of the book is on the recruitment, training and experiences of the sailors themselves. There is little discussion about the technical design of submarines or of the overall strategy of the naval war that Germany was fighting. The book is broken up into several sections - Enlistment and Training, The U-Boat Crew, U-Boats go to war, U-Boat crew in battle, U-Boat Commander, Changing face of the U-Boat war and Untypical operations. Even if you have read many sub books in the past as I have I think you will find the book interesting and perhaps learn some new things about Hitler's Grey Wolves. Showell is known for his extensive research which is evident to me in this book by the amount of new and interesting stories and observations about U-Boats which are often overlooked in other books. Another thing I like is that he very infrequently re-uses the same pictures and U-boat Commanders contains many images and I think the most interesting bunch out of all his other works. I must admit that he does have some odd views about the Nazis and after reading some other reviews of his books they have picked up on this too. His father was a motor mac on a U-Boat that was lost with all hands. If you like reading about this part of WWII I think you will like this book. It does not read at all like a research book but is instead an interesting study of the sailors who fought the undersea war for Germany.
