This book, a memoir of a young naval officer's experiences aboard the U.S. Battleship Maryland during WWII, is an absolutely terrific read. I could not put this book down until I finished it. If you are interested in what it was like to fight aboard an American battleship during WWII, then this book is for you. Although only one chapter of the book focuses on the Battle of Surigao Strait, the other thirteen chapters are fascinating. This book is especially informative when it comes to issues of naval gunfire against land targets and what it felt like to be on the receiving end of a kamikaze attack. "The Last Big-Gun Naval Battle" is very well written and well worth the price.

Only a small portion of this book actually deals with the battle, in and of itself it was a very enjoyable read. It mainly dealt with the author's experience as an NROTC graduate going aboard the USS Maryland in May of 1942 and his being assigned as a gunnery officer for the secondary battery (5" guns). He explains some of the day to day experiences of life aboard a WW2 battleship, which included weeks of no action interspersed with instances of shore bombardment. This was the main use of the old battleships commissioned pre and post WW1. There are several interesting photographs along with anecdotal explanations of items from launching and retrieving the float planes carried aboard, to a few maps of their bombardment duties in a few island invasions and diagrams of laying the main battery on targets both near and far. If you want to know JUST about the Battle of Surigao Strait, this otherwise good read would not be it. .

A great WWII eyewitness book. The author served onboard the USS Maryland, one of the battleships sunk at Pearl Harbor, then raised and repaired to rejoin the war with her crew burning for revenge. Sauer tells what it was like to serve during the height of the war and the amazing single-minded training it took to prepare for the moment when it was do-or-die: What it took to load and shoot the Big Guns, firing trajectories, how you "turn" an enormous convoy of huge ships... The absolutely best chapter takes you front row center at the battle of Surigao Strait in October of '44 -- U.S. battleships, destroyers, cruisers, and torpedo boats against the biggest guns of the Japanese navy. A catastrophic defeat for Japan, which retaliated with ferocious kamikaze attacks. Truly riveting stuff. Lots of pictures and other visuals including a diagram of the battle and the last crossing of the "T". I only wish there were more books like this! Obviously highly recommended.

Mr. Sauer gives an amazing, detailed and vivid account of his experiences on board USS Maryland in peace time as during war. He includes a lot of technical information written in a very friendly format regarding, among other things, the regular procedure to fire naval guns: The whole process, since the target is detected until the open fire order is given. A jewel shared.

The sub-tittle of the book reads "The battle of Surigao Strait"; it should be warned that this is only one chapter in the book though; of course, most of the rest refers to the wartime operations, but the whole book is not about this particular naval action.

Aside from this detail/clarification, reading this book has been a delightful experience. Highly recommended.
