Product Description

Superstars Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman face off in the intense action-thriller CRIMSON TIDE, now on Blu-ray Disc(R). Viggo Mortensen and James Gandolfini also star as the "full-throttle tension" (LOS ANGELES TIMES) builds relentlessly in this pulse-pounding format! Amidst a global crisis, the USS ALABAMA is ordered to launch its nuclear missiles -- signaling the start of World War III! And when the sub's commander and his executive officer clash over the validity of their orders, an epic struggle for control erupts under the sea. Watch every explosive frame in spectacular 1080p, while 5.1 48 kHz, 16-bit uncompressed audio blows you away. See, hear and feel the "Tide" rage through the power of Blu-ray(TM) High Definition!

You can almost hear the studio pitch meeting echoing throughout Crimson Tide like the sonar on the soundtrack: "It's The Cain Mutiny on a nuclear submarine!" When radio communications problems aboard the USS Alabama prevent the sub from receiving its orders clearly during a tense confrontation with Russian warships, Navy officer Denzel Washington faces a huge ethical dilemma: countermand the orders of legendary Captain Ramsey (Gene Hackman) to fire nuclear missiles, or follow his command and risk launching an unprovoked nuclear war. It's really an actors' picture, and the fun is in the fireworks between Washington and Hackman, each of whose characters articulates solid reasoning behind his decision. There are no easy villains, and there's no easy way to tell right from wrong--that's what makes the nuclear stakes so terrifying. Director Tony Scott (who directed Quentin Tarantino's True Romance script) called in Tarantino to punch up the dialogue, which is why, for example, the sailors talk about Silver Surfer comic books. The digital video disc is in anamorphic widescreen; the sonorous underwater rumblings on the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack will provide you with a good opportunity to show off your system's bass response. --Jim Emerson

Hollywood Pictures should sell the distribution rights to Warner or Universal so we can get a decent Anamorphic transfer. This is a title, along with many Paramount and other titles that desparitely need Anamorphic transfers. A modern HDMI DVD upscaler is not compatible with non-anamorphic titles. Non-anamorphic titles contort the screen to the point where black bars fill 80% of the screen, leaving only a small, unviewable slit to which the Movie shows. Miramax chose to give rights to Echo Bridge, which distributes the films in 6/8/10 packs with less than stellar quality, almost VHS quality. It makes your brand look bad, Miramax. It's not hard to do, a simple transfer of the HD copy to DVD without any enhancements and at a high 8500 bit rate would provide a very high quality viewing experience (on an HDMI DVD Upscaler) that rivals even Sony's Superbit DVDs. Even a home viewer could do it with an HD copy of the Film and a program like DeVeDe (Linux). It's dead simple and would cost them (Paramount etc) pennies to do. It would also rival the quality of modern DVD quality. I know this since we've done it with local production companies for their publications, legally of course with their material and for their distribution. It's 2014 , more than 70% of the movie watching peoples still choose to do so on DVD. Blu-ray is too consumer unfriendly and has failed to catch hold after 9 years with it's strict DRM and Internet requirements. I might add that various Virus and Malware have been reported to be infecting these Blu-ray players so it's only a matter of time before that format implodes. Digital downloads are the next likely choice, except you don't actually own the movie you pay for and it could disappear at any time. We've seen this happen with Cloud services disappearing and causing people to lose their belongings.

Showcasing the importance of command and structure whilst necessitating the importance of personal competence and responsibility, this drama under the ocean is a thrilling adventure with well written characters and a fascinating story. Definitely a watch if you have a keen interest in military operations.

Denzel Washington is face to face with Gene Hackman a power hungry nuclear submarine captain who gets carried away with power and Denzel the new operating officer questions him and takes over.. Of course this filming is done in a submarine so there is no lack of tension since the camera is right behind their shoulders.
Just rent it if you love both these actors, how can you lose?

Tense realistic thriller, particularly in the current political climate. Edge of seat countdown to doomsday drama, carried on by excellent acting and realistic relationships.

The XO was right The Captain was wrong he needed to confirm that last message that got cut off. For him not confirm it was reckless and incompetent. Its was about a real nuclear launch at a foreign nation. That would of most likely caused a nuclear holocaust. The XO was right in what he did. Confirm the complete EMO message As authentic if not do not launch. They were not the only ships with nukes on it, there was back up. It was not all on that sub. The ship for sure needed to have a radio back up. It was all on the Radio being fixed at the end? Or they would of launched without the confirmation? Didn't they have abort capability for missiles that were in the air back then? Good movie. The message from the movie is that the President will only have the capability to launch nukes.. I hope He or She has a good working radio to confirm the need to launch before launching. Use MOAB'S instead of nukes. Non nuclear bombs are not the end of the world types of bombs .Non-nuclear bombs is better no radiation.
