At 22.00 hours on 20 May 1942 the Darina (Master John Murray Cuthill), dispersed from convoy ON-93 on 17 May, was torpedoed and sunk by U-158 about 500 miles east-southeast of Bermuda. Five crew members and one gunner were lost. The master, 44 crew members and five gunners were rescued. The boat with the master and 17 survivors were picked up by the British Ardour and landed at Charleston, South Carolina on 27 May. The boat of the chief officer was rescued after 6.5 days 150 miles south-southeast of Bermuda by the American steam merchant Exanthia and landed at Norfolk, Virginia. The 17 occupants in the lifeboat of the third officer were rescued after six days by the Norwegian motor merchant Dagrun and landed at Capetown on 23 June.
