I'm not sure if this will help but here goes. Some time ago when visiting a military gaming store called "Game Master" and others like it, I noticed they had in stock many fine true to life military models and modeling materials. Perhaps if you contact some places like these in your area, they could inform you better.
People who shop at these places usually are "sticklers" for accuracy and detail. Also, maybe some worthwhile contacts could be made.
