Dear Joe,
Another tip regarding the water vents, which I have begun cutting out, is to take a roll of toilet paper, cut it in one-half lengthwise, paint it dark gray, and allign it to both sides, to replciate the pressure hull. I have no idea what to do about how to correctly cut out those square holes on the bottom. It sounds dangerous.
As far as paints, light gull grey by model master seems to be dead on. I am told Tamiya German grey is best for under the hull, but that no other brands mathc this closely. For the aborted academy project, I had tried naval aggressor grey for under the water-line. But I think that might be too dark. Of course, I am told that there are some variations in color and camouflage scheme. But most u-boats, particularly the VII -B's were painted this way.
One last question, word is floating aroud that a careful measurement of the dimensions reveals that this kit is actually closest to VII-C, most because of the more robust tower. Have you found this to be true? If so, mine will not be u-48, but some VII-C in my favor.
Warm Regards,
Einsamer WOld
