The Nichimo IX kits are closer to the real thing than the Academy one;as has been noted, the Academy model is "cartoon scale" and designed as a diving toy. There used to be another diving U boat which was loosely based on the VIIC - or are the two kits one & the same?

The models list on this site should come up with some answers for you.
