pre-war VII colour - some were red?

This forum has been of great benefit to me in determining whether my subject, the Amati U47, was red or dark grey beneath the waterline. Having studied many photograhs, and taken on board advice from yourself and others, I am now convinced that U47 was dark grey during the war.
However, I may decide to paint U47 as she appeared before the war since a red hull is more striking. The pictures at the addresses below suggest to me that the pre-war U35 MAY have been red.

My reason for thinking this is that wartime boats had dark grey painted up to just below their free-flooding holes. Pre-war uboats, especially those before 1939, had their paint division well below the free-flooding holes. Could it be that type VII uboats were originally red, but since this red showed at the lightest trim, they began in 1939 to have the whole lower hull painted in the dark grey up to just below the free-flooding holes?
Also, does anybody know whether the pre-war grey was darker than the standard RAL 7001 light ghost grey used during the war? Robert C. Stern's "Type VII UBoats" P139 says that it was. The following address suggests that also -

It shows U33 in Spanish Civil War colours and U30 in an light grey that is probably close to RAL7001(?). The rest of the uboats are in the grey that was common to uboats in 1937-1939, and is obviously darker. There are plenty of pictures of U35 in this grey on u-35.com. Please could anyone advise me on this darker grey, as I don't want to paint my uboat in the wrong colours for a second time!
Thank you for your time,
