Dear Ed,
The coloursceme from Dougie could apply to a number of boats, however, during the war there became a shortige of about everything in Germany. Germany tried to keep up but not always they succeeded. Paint, metal (i.o.w. bronze) and other common used goods for building a boat ot plane or whatever became rare and they tried just about everything to cope with this problem. Paint was not the same as it was in the beginning of the war. Bronze for the propellors became ordinary metal (Stahlguss schrauben) Not one boat was the same even when it came directly from the slipway. Colouration tend to differ from shipyard to shipyard as was the look of a U-boat after completion. Look what difference there is in railings or floodholes from one yard to the other. Germany put even boats to sea who were not even completed. Do'nt fuss about a shade lighter or darker. Do'nt waist time in THE PERFECT paintsceme for there is none. Go with your own calculated insight. Any light grey and any dark grey will weather and therefore is usable on a U-boat.
If it looks good it IS good for there is hardly no one left to disagree (colourwise). Just do'nt put a Mediterranian camouflage sceme on an Atlantic boat or type IX just because it looks nice. This, for sure, never occurred. I wish you luck on your models and hope to see the outcome on this site.
Kind regards
