IXC/40 Type

Hi,

I'm new to the forum but have utilized the various areas for my research. As my names suggests, I'm an artist that specilaises in WW2 subjects, but mainly aircraft. A recent sub commission has led to my interest and I now want to paint a U-Boat of the IXC/40 variety.

Can anyone tell me where I can find some schematic plans, drawings and good photos. I have found a lot on the net, but may have missed some.

Do the U-Boats of this class/type vary in external appearance?

What does the '40' stand for? It doesn;t appear to be the year of manufacture...........
